I don't know how common it is, this is the first I have heard of that happening, but I am sure other have done it. myself, I would just go with out a top. get a cutting board that would fit over the stove surfact to use if you need the space for counter space, other wise just leave it as a stove top. the glass doesn't do anything functional except give you a flat space for putting stuff on.
I like my top to help keep crumbs and dirt, grease etc getting into the stove pan.
