30 AMP Connection at home

I think I'm just going to wire an outdoor enclosure with a 110v 30amp receptacle and call it good for now. The last thing I want to do is let the magic smoke out of the entire RV... LOL....

A little late to the conversation, but my 2cents worth....and in agreement with several other posters. This recommendation is especially easy, as I’m “spending your money”! Put in the 50 amp service. If you upgrade to an RV with 2 AC’s you got the power. If you have RV friends/relatives come to visit....they have same power as a campground. We have 50 Amp service, sewer connection, and water. We’ve had friends/relatives spend time with us...very convenient for them. Also good for us to prepare for a trip, dump tanks, etc. after a trip, or simply power our unit when doing service to the unit.

Should’ve charged about $125.00/ nite for the eclipse crowd last summer! :S :B :W

Good call from the type questions you were asking. My first 5th wheel was 30 amp so that is what I wired. My new one is 50 amp and it runs just as well. Sure, this one has a gas electric water heater which I still need to run on gas if using the AC. If not then I can use the electric side which I never had the option on last 5th wheel.

Ya, I’ve heard rv’s and computers run on smoke and if it ever leaks out they quit working.

Slightly off topic but if you are having the work done anyway consider just putting in a Nema 14-50 50 amp plug. This will also addition of an Electric Vehicle charge station in the future. It probably won’t be much more than a 30 amp 120 connection. You can use the 14-50 with a 30 amp RV by using an adapter.

Personally I would (and Did) install a dedicated 30 amp outlet. I was running my AC while we were packing getting ready to leave for a trip. It was 90 degrees and about 90% humidity. I plugged the RV's 30 amp cord into a 20 amp socket in the garage with one of those adapters. After about a half and hour the A/C quit....I thought great just as we are ready to leave. When I went and checked the outlet the amp draw had literally melted the inside of the receptacle to the point it shorted out and actually had a burn mark like a lightning bolt on the sheetrock. So it must have shot out a pretty good arc. Lesson learned, I installed a dedicated circuit and 30 amp receptacle.Thank goodness for circuit breakers.

I did just the opposite. I had a 30 amp MH but since I was going to all of the trouble to install, I ran 6/3wg and put in a 50/30/20GFCI box tied to a 50 amp ganged breaker. I wanted to be ready for a 50 amp RV. I have since traded my MH for a TT, but I still only have a 30 amp RV. >G< However, I am ready for my NEXT trade being 50 amp.

Are you able to reach a house outlet with the camper 30 amp power cord? if so get a 30 to 20 amp adapter and plug it in and then check your voltage inside with the air on. I been doing it this way for 18 years and 3 different fifth wheels.

As my daddy always said, you can pole vault over mouse droppings if you want to. :B

If I knew then what I know now, I would have done the same and had a 50 amp put in. Oh well!

Just a thought, but many older homes just have 100 amps available. If you put a 50/30/20 next to the driveway, your guests MH may cut you short, when using many household appliances at once.
