3M Eraser Wheel????? UPDATE PICTURES

Anyone ever use one of those eraser wheels to take off decals on the trailer sides??? here is what i am talking about.

eraser wheel

just want to know from someone that used this if its easy to do or do u really have to know what u r doing as to not to screw up the paint...they make it look so easy like the decal just peels off. so just wondering if that is really how it works. The decals are old and curling from the sun, not new ones.
thanks
  • :) Hi, when I was a Mac Tools distributor, I used to sell those. There is a recommended RPM for these to work correctly.

Yes, I used 2 of them to remove the decals on my trailer (actually the glue). You need to remove as much of the decal as possible, and then get a gallon of denatured alcohol and several terry cloth towels. It is not easy by any means. You will have to use a fairly powerful drill. I used a 1/2" Magnum® Drill, 0-950 RPM

Correct! My 12v Dewalt would have required more back up batteries than I have, to keep busy. Had to go to my old Mikita corded drill.
  • I removed all the decals from the front of my 5er. Most were so brittle and cracked they were very difficult to remove with heat gun and scraper. Gave up and bought a 3M eraser wheel and it worked great. A lot of the adhesive balls up and comes off with the pieces of decal. Final cleanup is pretty easy with 3M adhesive remover. As noted above, it does require a good drill.
  • MAy not need anything for the decals,, went out today and just started picking at them and they are just peeling off in large pieces at a time. didn't put anything on them. so hopefully they will all come off easy and just clean the edges up with some alcohol... below are a couple of pictures of the decals peeling.
thanks for the help, will follow up once all done.

  • Eraser wheels work great but not the best application to remove large decals. I'd still have one to do the job though.
    What is the surface?
Some powder coat likeon aluminum panels doesn't take kindly to the heat of an eraser wheel or string solvents. Also tougher to scrape with a razor blade.
If you have fiberglass/ gelcoat then it's very durable. Eraser wheel is great but watch the heat it will yellow the gel pretty quick if not careful.
I'd heat, hair dryer if you don't know what you're doing quite yet. Heat gun or even torch if you're good at it. Easier to scorch with them but quicker.
Then scrape or peel with a single edge razor.
Remove glue etc with lacquer thinner, acetone, adhesive remoever etc.
    then polish out.
As always test your methods ina. Small inconspicuous spot first.
