OP, you also mentioned "big dollar solar set up". I thought the same way at first. I mentioned the brand that I bought because it is less expensive but performs just as well as higher dollar units. To put 400 watts on your roof you are looking at: controller, shunt and monitor panel $350, wiring and hardware $150, panels $500. $1,000 dollars but it will do all your battery charging then just fire up the generator for microwave, hairdryer or toaster. People would probably tolerate the noisiest generator if you only ran it for 15 minutes twice a day. Solar is fantastic.
