Since budget is a concern and you do seem willing to concede that life can actually go on without A/C I might suggest you invest in a single, "budget conscience" Champion 2K inverter genset, then later if you do find that A/C really is a necessity for the type of camping you do you can always invest in a second Champ that can be paralleled to the first, thereby forcing the need to direct the expense involved in achieving your goals.

I started looking around locally and found one of these champion 2000 watt inver generators not far from where I live. It comes like new in the box and the owner says he has only run it 2 times. Comes with box and all paperwork for $350. Should I go ahead and pull the trigger on this? Anybody have any negative experiences with this gen?

I'm going to pick it up tomorrow unless someone talks me out of it. Seems to have very good reviews. Only negatives seem to be from folks who don't know how to properly store a carbed motor.
Obviously no one here can tell you one way or the other whether you should or shouldn't buy this particular genset but in general the reviews for the Champion 2K Inverter Generator have been quite positive, including reliable parts & service support from Champion. If this unit starts and runs well, outputs voltage correctly, then it would seem to be worth $350 as it will easily power pretty well anything in your camper other than A/C, re-charge your batteries, and has the ability to be paralleled to a second unit in the future should you find the need for more power. OTOH if you find you really don't use it that much after all you'll always find a willing buyer for it ... seems like an easy decision to me. :)
