50 amp at 30 amp pedestal ?

We are considering a new TT that has 50 amp. We stay a lot in state parks that are only 30 amp. Would we just use an adapter. Will this cause any issues with things working and running. The TT has 1 15k ac unit but braced for a second should we want to add one. If we did would we be able to run both on a 30 amp pedestal safely. Tks

  • The cheater box SDcampoweroperator is talking about will work UNLESS you plug into a 20 amp GFCI breaker (which most campgrounds I've been in have). The breaker will trip. The dog bones work, but you can't run everything on 30 amp that you can with 50 amp. I have the Progressive Industries cheater box and a fellow RVer has the yellow one (not sure who makes it) and both won't work with the GFCI breaker.

    This is all you need.

Sorry, that's not the one. This is:

Has a 30A MALE to a 50A FEMALE that plugs into your 50A male.
  • I carry a 30A to 50A adapter as well as a 30A to 20A adapter. I've been in parks where the 30A Female receptacle is loose or broken, as well as one CG in Canada that only offered 50A and 20A at the pedestal. Pretty cheap insurance.
  • We use 30 amp cable almost all the time even when 50 amp is available just so I don't have to wrestle with that 50 amp anaconda of a cable. The 30amp cable is so much lighter and more manageable. Just get a quality dogbone adapter and your set.

  • there are 'cheater ' plugs that plug into both the 30&20 outlets in th e pedestal. They do not give you 50a as advertised, only a 30 on one hot leg and 20 on the other, IF the camp cabling is wired for it. Loop fed is the term.
If the camp is wired like a house, spider web like then the most you can get is what the maximum breaker in the camps panel will carry.
    Stay Safe.

If you plug the 30A in and then test each hot on the 50A end, both will have voltage.

30A to 50A adapter feeds both hots on the 50A.

Trying to run both A/C's at same time is a problem due to only having 30 amps total available
  • When we had a 50amp MH we often used a 30amp adapter. As has been stated, there is a limit to the number of appliances you can run but we were never inconvenienced by it.
