Except, fifth wheel trailers usually have double the payload requirement of a bumper pull of the same overall weight. The OP does not have a tow vehicle and there are people suggesting that he buy a half ton instead of a three quarter ton to tow a fifth wheel trailer without knowing anything about the actual pin weight of the trailer. You are not doing him any favor. So, he goes out and buys his brother in law's old 1500 or F150, where will he be then? If he is experienced enough to know his pin weight as well as the payload of his intended tow vehicle, he would not be on here asking for basic tow vehicle advice. Give him the worst you have and stand back and see if it works. I will always favor a more competent tow vehicle over the other.
The OP wrote, "I've talked to a few other campers and people seem to really like 1/2 tons for pulling stuff, but I'd rather err on the side of caution and don't want to buy a truck (albeit cheap and used), only to destroy it pulling more than it was meant to."
Does that sound like someone who is going to go out and order a HD F-150 or equivalent? I still suggest an older model 3/4 or 1 ton model even if it costs him a few hundred more.
All good information. However, if the truck is rated to handle the load - then just fine is just fine. Being a fifth wheel or not has nothing to do with it.
