5th Wheel w/ 1/2 Ton
I literally put the cart before the horse and bought a late 90's 5th wheel trailer before buying a truck to pull it with! I'm not sure if I can get away with a beefy 1/2 ton or should look for some...

Brand new truck, brand new camper, I would expect no problems even if he's moderately overloaded.
The truck is not going to fall to pieces the second it makes contact with the trailer.
Any issues will crop up over time, as you get some experience towing and/or the rig gets some wear and tear on it.
If you don't camp very much, you may never run into any issues.
The more you tow the more wear and tear you subject the truck to. Suspension parts fatigue and wear, but more importantly the "newness" in your mind wears off and you start to notice things you don't necessarily like about the rig.
