I have a 2.8 L VM Motori 4 cyl diesel in my Jeep Liberty. Not exactly what the OP was discussing, but I can shed a little light on the subject.
This Jeep is small, but heavy at 4300 lbs dry weight. And it does have the aerodynamic advantages of a cinder block. I did put an aftermarket tune on it, and have gotten as high as 34.75 mpg, on summer fuel, but usually get 27-29 mpg for the combination of highway and short city trips I make. Towing a 5,000 lb, full height/width 21 foot travel trailer, I generally get 14-15 mpg.
I can tell the OP that the major thing that sucks up fuel is the frontal surface area of the rig, not the weight. I did make one trip towing a VW Jetta on a tow dolly, total weight about 3500 lbs or so, but MUCH better wind resistance, and got 18 mpg.
As a general rule of thumb, the diesel/gas comparison will show about 1/3 better mileage from a diesel, provided you are dragging around the same weight with the same wind resistance, with engines at about the same general performance.
So, I agree with the others, that the numbers he has seen are possible, but YMMV.
EDIT: detail is 2.8 L 4 cyl engine makes 335 ft lbs and 188 hp; tow rated for 5,000 lbs.
