Give up on the "the don't pass gas below a quarter philosophy".
In the old days gas gauges were not very accurate, and gas stations further apart.
It's different now. Plan your trip out. Decide how often you need to rest. How many towns are along the route. And quit worrying about running out of gas.
On my 2004 Chevy pickup I tested it out and had a friend follow me with extra gas. I can drive 25 miles after the low fuel light comes on. Maybe, even more !
I just chickened out after that many miles and that is when I got to the next town anyway. Most gas stations in my area are about 25-30 miles apart.
Here's the thing... I've had this van for 14yrs. It has 93,000 miles on it (80% towing) and is in great condition. With my old TT I got 8mpg and it was perfect timing for stopping, nature calls, stretching, and switching drivers. New TT has more wind resistance (it's 1ft further off the ground, 2ft higher overall and 10inches wider) thus the reduced mileage. Pushing it I need gas every 160 miles. I have 5miles, yes five miles from when the light comes on to running out of gas.
But you're right. With today's technology I know exactly where the next gas station is. I need to break with the old patterns and develop new ones. Driving across Kansas I had to plan carefully but most often gas is every 5 to 20 miles. So suck it up! Right? Not yet!!!
What does everyone think of the idea of a 5 gallon spare gas can strapped to the battery rack on the TT? Just as insurance. I'd get a really good metal one!!! :@
