80+ and still pulling a travel trailer or Fifth Wheel?

It's different for everybody, depends on the individuals physical and mental condition. We are all different. I'll be 80 in 3 years and unless something drastic happens, fully expect that we'll still be moving around.

My Grandfather is 82. He owns a trailer dealership (flatbed, stock, horse, cargo trailers). He still pulls them around. He also still rides his Harley Davidson and cuts his own firewood.
I hope to be even half that fit at that age.

What a hard subject and such a delicate balancing act. When do we as children go from the kids to the parenting role with our parents. Good Luck

My dad and mom were active campers, driving their class A around the country into their 80's. Then Alzheimer's took my dad.

My FIL is 84 and still tows his TT although his body is giving out. His hip and back just won't let him spend the hours behind the wheel to go very far so we're limiting travel to short trips.

I would think the decision to come off the road should be up to him and his health professionals. They can make an objective opinion about his physical and mental abilities to continue towing.

is he sharp? when you see the light bulb dim... it's time to park it.

A good question to ask yourself when you get to 80.

Just be happy he recognizes that he is approaching that time. There are those who can't bring themselves to admit when their abilities are starting to decline.
As far as age, that can vary tremendously. I have seen 60 yr olds that have much less capability than some 80 yr olds. All depends on the individual's health, physically and mentally.

I did hear about a Airstream owners club member who forgot to put the pin in the hitch receiver, and drove "towards" a camp out. Many of the Airstream owners club where in their 80's.

As long as they can remember to hook up the RV correctly, and have the vision needed to see 300' down the road, and keep track of what is around them, can back up fine, and drive defensively, they should be good to go camping.

However limited vision, forgetfullness, and the in-ability to set up and take down the campground woudl be good reasons to give up camping. Might be time to get another driver, and he can still tag along.

Leaving the trailer at a campground is also a excellent idea too.
