- Good old Michigan. They offer to renew my grandmother's license by mail every year. She's 96 and legally blind.
- Jeez, that's horrible. I see so many idiots driving without headlights at dusk, at night, in the rain, etc. All the idiot proofing they do to cars, but lights are still optional on a lot of vehicles.
Automatic rain sensing wipers... but they don't turn lights on, even though it is required in most (if not all) states to have lights on with wipers.
Seatbelt warning so you don't kill yourself in a wreck, but you can drive with no lights on on the wrong side of the road... no warnings. - 99 years old certainly gets your attention and makes the news. But wrong way fatal collisions are a regular occurance for all age groups in the DFW area, if not every where else. Seems to be no answer to it.
- My father had the attention span of a goldfish but he could pass any test Calif gave him. I finally hid his car keys and left him the telephone number of local cab company and a couple hundred bucks. He eventually found a way to start his car and ended up running through the front window of Denny's mistaking the gas pedal for the brake. Thankfully nobody was hurt but himself - he broke his hip and that was the beginning of the end. States need to step up and do a better job of testing.

Happens a lot here in MI too. Usually large amounts of alcohol and/or drugs are involved.- We have automatic headlights in our cars. Why do we not have that feature in our motorhomes?
- Aside from the licensing issue, mandatory DRL's anyone? At least they keep people from driving with zero lights.

X2- Driver education and proper screening are the only ways to reduce the number of such tragedies. DRL's have been mandatory on new vehicles sold in Canada since 1989 but they are not fool proof. Too many people rely on them for night driving forgetting that the tail lights are not on. We have drivers who resent government interference disabling them by pulling the fuse. Every time something is made idiot proof a better idiot comes along.
