We only camp in campgrounds during the off-season when there are fewer campers. Usually others are quiet but at the Burney Falls campground in Northern California, one guy talked loudly, drunkenly for hours who was in the site across from us. And, their kids thought it was okay to ride their bikes through our campsite. Next fall, we will camp at Pit River, a BLM campground close by. Cheaper and quieter.
Or, the yahoos at the campground along the North Umpqua River who practiced shooting for a half hour. Yep, we prefer boondocking.
