The Dawn liquid dishwashing soap breaks down the oily substance of the spray. The "safe" reaction of the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda chemically neutralize the odor. I've read that this "recipe" was developed by a chemist. Stars101, a previous poster/responder said it had been tested and proven effective by a group of college students. We can vouch for the positive results when used after our Alaskan huskey was sprayed a few years ago. Some also recommend a final rinse of heavily diluted vinegar, but as our son said, she then smelled like an Easter egg coloring party.
