Accident rates

Which are involved in more accidents motor homes or 5th wheels / travel trailers and could the weak link be brake systems??

  • For travel trailers, sway seems to be the thing- it is unfortunately not rare to see a trailer on its side across the Interstate around here. Of course, I also see an amazing number of trailers being pulled just dropped on the ball- no weight distribution or sway control at all.

  • To answer your question, I don't believe those kinds of stats are kept by anyone, except, perhaps, insurance companies, so any replies will be totally speculative. And as far as comparing braking systems as causal in an accident that also is purely speculative. Perhaps we should just vote on the topic for all the good it would do since none of us know the answer.

Motor homes are also often driven by older drivers with slower reaction times.. Now some of us.. BACK OFF the person in front of us so we have more time to react.> Some tailgate,,,,, just like car drivers do.
  • I know this isn't scientific but based on my observations while travelling and news reports I see more MHs involved in accidents.

My theory.... MHs typically travel faster than trailers on the roads.
  • I have never seen any statistics on that. It would require a fairly extensive study on total miles traveled per type RV and number of accidents by RV type per mile traveled to have any meaning. A simple number of accidents per RV type would not have much meaning.
