Based on my having a 32' class C and not pulling a toad, I would say I would not worry too much about length. Once one gets too big to fit in a single parking space, you need either two end to end or possibly one with empty room to overhang. In my experience, this is not generally too problematic in rural or suburban areas and nothing I would attempt in an urban setting. (Needless to be say, length matters very little on the highway.)
I think a toad is much more of a benefit if one stays several days in one place, and lacking one not a great drawback if one moves camp relatively frequently and plans to run errands on the way. Things like getting around gas stations are simpler without a toad.
