If there are national forests near where you are going, they are the cheapest sites around. Some of them have electric sites, too.
Do any of the state park systems some type of season pass?
Be sure and take plenty of drinks & snacks during your day trips, even pack a lunch if you will be near a place to picnic. Drinks & snacks are seriously expensive to buy on the spur of the moment. Each kid can carry some in a backpack.
Do a lot of meal planning & pre-cooking, avoids wasted food.
Do your food shopping while traveling at a discount store like Walmart, and stick to the list. Don't take kids with you, LOL.
Take your laundry detergent etc with you, avoid the laundromat vending machines.
