I wanted to post this several days ago, but did not have computer access. And, the thread that this is directed to, has since been closed. I have met and got to know several folks from Canada, and all were exceptionally nice people. I allowed a post by "myredracer" ( I quoted the offensive part) to anger me and I responded in an inappropriate manner. To all (except myredracer) I offer my most sincere apology. I have "no problem" whatsoever with Canadian law. It is your Sovereign Nation, and you must have laws and borders to protect your country. A nation without laws and borders is not a sovereign nation. Your laws make it inconvenient for those of us who must travel across our nation (America) (far too many violent criminals), to get to your beautiful country. But that is a decision each individual must make. Your gun laws will not stop me from visiting and enjoying what your country has to offer. I pray that you, as a nation, never have to deal with the criminal element that is plaguing our nation. I have enjoyed camping next to numerous Canadian folks in the SD Black Hills. I've camped several times in Canada, with great interaction as well. I did have one very early morning incident with one of their bears while tenting.It's been a while since I've been at the border crossings. At that time the Canadian patrol were friendly, helpful people, that treated me much better than my own US border patrol on my return.I'm sure you feel better, after this post. I don't take sides on forum spats, but would like to mention my experience with myredracer. I was in the process of doing a home RV hook up installation, and started a thread with some concerns. I ended up sending a PM to myredracer, asking specifics on load being added to my home entrance. He is an electrical engineer and sent back several lengthy, very helpful, detailed PMs, to someone asking on an internet forum. I've since read many of his posts, seems like a real stand up guy.Jerry

I don't agree that guns are necessary to travel safely in the USA. That's not supported by facts.

I, too, have a significant collection of firearms.

A little, a LOT, off topic, but here's your tip of the week.

The really simple way to convert metric speed limits to imperial is as follows;

Divide the posted limit by 10, i.e. drop the right hand digit. So 100 becomes 10, 60 becomes 6.

Now multiply that remaining number by 6. So 6 x 6 = 36. So 60 kmh becomes 36 mph.

Easy-peasey!!!

Oh and don't fret being a few mph off the exact speed, our police are pretty tolerant, other than places like school zones, etc, you won't get stopped for doing 2 or 3 mph over the limit. In fact here in Ontario there is no penalty for anything less than 10 mph over the limit and a few years back the then head of our Provincial police, our State Troopers, made a public statement that officers would not stop people on the highway unless they were doing 15+ mph over the limit as long as they were not driving dangerously, hopping lanes, tailgating, etc.

When you visit a neighboring country, or state for that matter, you obey their laws...period!

It doesn't matter what you feel or think about them. Those residents are under no obligation to cater to your feelings.

This is starting up in NJ with our very unpopular governor wanting to change the gun laws so that NJ has to accept the laws of another state.

If that is the case then someone from PA shouldn't have to wear a helmet when they ride in NJ. Someone from CO should be able to light up a joint if they feel like it. If it is going to apply to guns it should apply to anything.

We've been metric here in Canada since the 1970s so I suspect you mean kph, not mph, particularly when referring to any public official who would always quote in metric. 15 mph over is ~ 24 kph over and should attract the attention of the gendarmes, ignoring of course the morons who consistently run 140+ kph on the 400 series under the assumption they're invincible and somehow exempt from any special attention. :R

I just read through that whole thread, and personally, I think your apology should extend to myredracer as well. Not sure why you feel he should be exempt. He really simply stated his opinion that he wishes we Americans would just leave our guns home. Maybe it was a bit 'blunt', but I've seen 100 times worse on this forum.

Just in full disclosure, I am pro 2nd amendment, own many firearms, have a concealed carry permit, and regularly do so. But, if I ever go to Canada, I will obey their laws. Just mentioning that in case you get the impression Im anti-gun because I think your apology should include him.

Have to agree. I do travel in Canada a fair amount and unless I were hunting or competing wouldn't carry. I have never felt the need. I, too, wonder why the "better 12 as my jurors than 6 as my pall bearers" mentality is so prevalent but agree it has to do with the 7/24 new coverage that repeats the same bad stories over and over and over.

Should you choose to carry just comply with the law and that goes for stateside as well. It's that simple.

OK.... On the firearms needed topic! I have lost three, close personal friends to murder!!!!! Two ( plus the wife of one) were very elderly senior citizens.... Not drug dealers hanging out in the bad side of town. The other was my age, an Eagle Scout and working his way through seminary (to be a minister), and was murdered at work during a robbery. None were armed!! SO.... I don't want to be an "easy" victim. Is it a guarantee that you are safe.... No! But, I carry a spare tire, hoping that I'll "never" need it! While crime numbers are in fact down, you may feel differently if you are personally involved! Thanks for tolerating this rant.

re all the personal opinions found here on this thread...I don't know what has happened to the old social practice of minding your own business and keeping your opinions to yourself.
I mean, I don't really care what others think of me or my country, so I don't feel a need to tell others what I think of them or their country. I'm content to take people, one on one, the way they come, and I don't have a need to respond to every remark someone makes about anything. :)

Best way to convert mph to kph is to change the setting in your driver information center to tell the speedo to display kph. Virtually every vehicle on the road is capable of this. Those that aren't often have the speedo marked in both.
