Manufacturers could profit by offering an "option" that would cover the extra cost of workers taking time to do it right and additional profit for the company. A system of worker id's associated with reports of subsequent reports of problems would help ensure the workers took their jobs seriously.
What about all the money they could save in warranty repairs had they done it correctly? The company is responsible for their products, and therefore need highly skilled workers. How do they get them? Train them! Motivate them with pay incentives, and in-company competition - AKA performance management! Get rid of the loosers! Have a quality control program!
One only needs to look at the auto industry today to see how the domestic automakers can produce world-class vehicles at competitive prices. It took 20 years of having their butts kicked in by foreign rivals but they finally got the message: In order to survive in a competitive marketplace you must provide a superior product at a competitive price or you're not going to be around for long.
This is so correct. I worked at the first North American Japanese auto assembly plant - Mazda in Flatrock Michigan in the early 90's when the Japanese were eating our lunch in quality. These guys trained us to do our jobs to the nth degree and we won numerous awards.
What is needed is some competition for RV manufacturers. Create an RV manufacturer with above average assembly, and quality materials at a reasonalbe price and you'd be on top. Lance seems to be on the right track at least at least compared to the one I have.
