Paying more for better materials is one thing. Having to pay more to ensure I don't get a lemon? That scares me, and a company that requires me to pay more to ensure I have working plumbing, electrical, sewage, and structural items will get me to go find a company that has this from the get-go. This is a no-brainer. Yes, it might cost extra to use Uponor expansion fittings over crimps or 12 gauge wire over 14 gauge wire for receptacles, but a RV maker should pass those costs on (which likely would mean at most 5-10%) and keep a good reputation of making decent products. The RV roof and delamination fiascos are examples of this. RV makers should just use fiberglass or aluminum sheeting for the roof and be done with it. That way, a puncture or a scrape by a small branch doesn't cause major water damage later on.
I do think the RV industry will have some changes soon. It won't be from China, but from Europe and Australia where the makers will set up shop and build rigs here instead of importing them. A local small RV dealer, Princess Craft, is doing a booming business, so there is definitely a market for well-built rigs, and if US companies can't fill it, European companies may end up stepping in.
