Unless I knew the road, I would certainly follow the speed limits "suggested" for trucks.
The times that I've had cars pile up behind has usually been on local roads that I don't know... but I am sure the locals who do know the roads fly along them.
I have found that usually the speed limit signs on roads I don't know are good to follow and I actually treat them as "limit" signs not minimum signs.
I have not had anyone confront me about driving - but there have been instances where I am sure a car driver thought I should have done something different, but for whatever reason I was unable to. Especially moving over on a highway to let someone on... besides not being required to, most times if I move over to the left I will crowd (or worse) cars in the left lane. Then you get into the discussion of "should I cruise while towing on a 3 lane road in the middle or right lane?".
Just drive safe and defensively. And do your best to keep your cool, as the OP seems to have done.
