Angry wannabe RV police encounter

Sounds like the same guy who hassled us in the same area about a week ago.

We were traveling up the coast in our Class A DP and pulled off the road into one of the rare turnout -- which, by the way, was unmarked.

After 10 minutes or so, a pickup truck also pulls into the turnout. Then a guy gets out and knocks on our door.

The wife takes this "call" as I'm in the John.

The Mrs said he starts railing about how he has to get to work and not everyone can take the time to sight see, etc, etc. The Mrs was uber apologetic -- Thank god! -- as he sounded like he was just this side of road rage. I would not have been that cool. (I wondered ,though, if he was in such a hurry, how did he have time to stop and chit chat?)

We've driven thousands of miles on ALL kinds of roads, and there was no way we'd drive at speed on some sections of that coastal highway. We're not locals who know every inch of the road.

Finally, CA marks highway turnouts much better than OR and WA.

And people question why I carry and won't travel in states where I can't. the risk is one of these hot heads will decide to show me a thing or two and not just talk a game. We had a case here in MI where mr hot head "alleged" to punch the driver, who then ended the encounter.

Was it a cop or a civilian?

I'm not big but I'm always packing heat. Something about a 45 auto that makes really big bully's think twice about their stay on this planet.

Never had the need but would if I was threatened. Ain't no whoop arse with me.

First of all I will say that in no way do I condone the other drivers’ over the top response and threats. I haven’t driven that section a highway for quite some time but a quick look on google maps shows pullouts or other places about every 1000 feet or less. When you refer to it as a “30 minute section” please tell me you didn’t subject anyone to having to follow you that whole time. That could make a reasonable person turn into a raging a-hole. Remember, “fast” in an RV is painfully slow in a regular car. Nobody drives at the recommended corner speeds (which are not law). If you had 5 or more behind you you were actually breaking the law too.

As someone who has been the victim of selfish RV drivers more times than I care to recall, I swore never to be that guy no matter how I had to pull off.

Yes, there will always be those you cannot please but it almost would have had to reached at least a little into the problem range for him to spend the time to try to “educate” you. I congratulate you on the fact that this hasn’t happened before. You must not normally be “that guy”.

Now is when all the older, retired folks rip me a new one...

We had a home in Yachats and I must say that I've never run into that sort of behavior from Haceta Head south to Sutton Lake but there does seem to be more and more of that behavior on OR highways today. Most of the morons are what are called Millennials or Hipsters that have recently move to OR for the cheap land and feel that hauling cookies is their right.

I do recommend using the pullouts but as said the ones from Haceta Head south are a bugger to exit the hwy and then reenter. I like using the ocean side parking lot at the Sealion Caves as It makes a great pullout.

Be very thoughtful regarding your response to angry people. Sometimes it is like turning the crank on a jack-in-the-box, and the next slight turn can be deadly.

Debating or in any way exacerbating the conflict will not play well to a prosecutor or a jury if a situation escalates to violence. No matter how much you have to swallow your pride, a fight that you avoid is a fight you have won.

Always conduct yourself in such a manner so as to preserve your identity as the innocent law-abiding victim, even in your verbal replies.


When the jury has to decide the identity of the idiot, do not make it a multiple choice test for them.
