Another blue tote concern

So as not to hijack another thread, I'm asking my husbands concern here. We use our tote rarely, but when we do DH will not pull it behind the truck. He loads it in bed of truck. He's concerned the axle will get too hot when pulling and melt the tank. I don't see this happening as I've never seen a post about such, but thought I'd post anyway...although it probably won't change his mind either! LOL! Your thoughts??
  • I might have to get me one of these tote thingys. It appears that I might be missing out on some fun others are having.
  • We have seen the axle heat up and you can guess what happened!! They were driving to fast. We use the macerator to pump the tanks into the back of our truck where tote will reside until we are done.
  • There a times when we couldn't get in a full hookup site at a CG. If it was just the DW and I, we could probably go several days before we had to dump but with a family of 4 (2 younger kids that really don't know the purpose of water conservation) we can easily fill the grey tank in 48 hours. The tote is a big space hog but it is necessary sometimes, at least in our case.

One would hope the wheels turn on the axle, but ... I do know folks who have upgraded the wheels (another thread currently here in fact) and I have seen lots of folks tow 'em

TOW SLOW, that's all i can say,, TOW SLOW like 5mph

But if you want to load 'er into the truck,, No problem there either. If I had a truck I'd put a 55 gallon drum and use my macerator to fill it, then gravity dump.

    The wheel mod thread:

We can go 8 to 9 days on our on board tank with two, washing dishes daily, and showering daily.
  • My axle doesn't rotate. The wheels have bearings in the center so all the friction/heat is on the sealed bearings.

Now, I have replacement pneumatic wheels from Tractor Supply. The original wheels did have the plastic of the wheels rotate on the non-moving axle.

Second point - I use a bungee cord to make sure the handle doesn't come off the ball as easily. I also usually have the DW pull the tote while I walk behind it to make sure to catch it if the handle comes off. And I need the exercise, and to make sure she keeps the speed down.

  • Like Ron3rd said, tow slow but I believe most of the moving friction is inside the wheel hub where it meets the axle and not where the axle is pressed into the tank.

We've never put our tote in the bed of the truck. Huge waste of effort IMO. Totes are MADE to be towed. Yes, you could overheat the axle if you tow too fast. That's why you're limited to something like 5 mph to prevent this. Never heard of anybody burning up an axle btw.
