In some cases, that's not an unreasonable attitude.
But the law IS the law and sometimes there are legal obligations that can't be signed away. Like being responsible for someone else's property when it is in your care.
This person needs to find out for sure what the law says in his state. For that, you probably need a lawyer.
And I agree that beating someone up for water over the dam is not helpful or friendly or useful......especially when it appears that he already KNOWS that he made a mistake.
