Look at how many folks come to this forum and ask for directions, "where should we go", "what should we see", etc. People don't do their own research anymore - they depend on others to do it for them (whether a GPS, a stranger on the internet, or a guide book).
In urban areas, that's not so terrible as GPS is pretty good and there are people around to help you out if something is wrong. When you start heading into rural areas, that's when the problems occur.
And many people have been "outdoors" and are quite good at camping, etc., but don't understand the difference between driving to Lake Tahoe and driving into a forest or a desert.
