As for the quality of maps, surprisingly given the capabilities of technology, maps are still pretty bad in many areas. That said, never seemed to stop me from exploring the western backcountry for decades without incident.
That's true, the gps just enabled them to make really bad decisions.
We also look forward to wandering the back roads of the west. We've been 70 miles from the nearest paved road. But we are prepared for trouble. We carry shovels, a farm jack to extricate us from being stuck. Extra water and fuel. A good selection of first aid material and so on. And most of all we don't do anything that looks really risky.
We also follow the rule to leave the truck in 2WD until we have to shift to 4WD high, if we have to use 4WD low, then it's time to turn around and go back.
