CoPilot allows one to zoom in and out at will and the map continues to pan. Also one can turn on or off zoom at turns. When it is many miles to the next event it zooms way out. It zooms in slowly as one approaches an event like turn etc. All switchable. Same app on phone or iPad. It is not a free app.
I also use google maps when in close range to targets as the downloaded on the fly map segments can contain late updates. Google maps on an iPhone works well for a quickie donut find or the nearest HD.
Any significant trip in distance or time or remoteness I use my BadElf receiver which feeds up to 5 devices via Bluetooth. So I can have the iPad marine chart at the helm and a second iPad or iPhone out on the deck for crew. This also works for a navigator in a MH who wants to sit in the "backseat". And it does not require cell service for either position or map display.
Last year I used CoPilot to plot a trip with stops from Baltimore to St. John's Nfld. It's a lot of miles and it was strange watching it count down the many miles remaining. We did 4200 miles, some on the back roads in 4x4 low visiting mooses. The learning curve to exploit that app is ongoing.
