Interesting thread.
As some others have stated, we never leave home in our RV without:
1) An empty grey water tank.
2) An empty black water tank (except for pre-charge water).
3) A full propane tank.
4) A full fuel tank.
5) A full fresh water tank filled from our spring/well, as well as extra purchased water (since our spring/well water is not fit to drink directly) in 2.5 gallon containers.
I hate having to service tanks any sooner than absolutely necessary on camping trips. However, we have a motorhome purpose-bought with excess weight carrying capacity so full fresh water, propane, and fuel tanks present no handling issues. In fact, our motorhome rides better the fuller it's tanks are.
Our camping methods and philosophies closely match those of Desert Captain ... except that our fresh water RV habits come from living around 37 years in a home with marginal fresh water supplies at the end of every summer and into early fall until the rains come - even worse now with the CA drought. ;)
