Answering questions without knowing details?

I recently experienced this myself on another message board, I asked a specific technical question and received 5 answers within 24 hours unfortunately none of them were an answer to the question that I asked. Out of the 5, 1 was as basic intro statement about the technology in question, and 1 was a statement about why the layout I had was not optimal (note in the question I stated that I was working with some pieces that were already in place and could not easily be changed). The other 3 looked like the responder just skimmed the question and went off on topics regarding some of the key words.
