Any experience towing a Ford CMax Hybrid?

Am considering purchasing a Ford CMax Hybrid (non-electric version) as a potential four-down dinghy to tow behind a Winnebago View. The CMax is allowable for flat towing according to owner manual, and weighs 3,500 lbs. Has anyone has any experience towing the CMax? Any comments or advice would be welcome.
  • I have and have towed a 2013 CMax We had it set up with a charge line so no problems with batteries. The only issue is that sometimes when making a turn, right or left doesn't matter, we will get the death wobble. Slowing to an almost stop will correct the issue and off we go. Doesn't happen every turn but does happen. We have tried all the offered solutions but haven't been able to correct that problem. Other than that it tows great.
  • I towed a 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid for several years. It is very similar to the C-max hybrid, has pretty much same drivetrain.

I will echo DouglasC's comments - Ford hybrid vehicles tow great, it worked great for us. Very simple to tow, just basically hitch it up, throw it in neutral and go. I actually kind of miss my Fusion, may well get another one in the future (currently tow a Ford Taurus).

Just a few things to keep in mind about towing a Ford hybrid vehicle:

    1. For whatever reason, there is significant draw on the battery when towing these Ford hybrids. Maybe the Cmax is different, but there is a good chance that as part of your wiring, you may have to wire a charge line to the battery. Very simple to do, is a good idea regardless, and will solve this problem completely.

    2. With the hybrid Fusion we had, electric power braking is on all the time, and will be on when towing. Meaning, the brake pedal will be easy to push down even when towing with engine off. Not really an issue, and depending on what brake system you chose, it can be really good. Its just something you need to keep in mind when choosing, setting up your supplemental brake system.

Anyway, good luck with it. I think you'll like it. :)
  • I have towed several of the Ford Motor Co. hybrids including a 2008 Mercury Mariner, a 2012 Ford Fusion, a 2014 Lincoln MKZ and currently tow a 2019 Ford Fusion Energi. All tow great! I also know a couple who tow a Ford C-Max. They are also very happy with the car in general and the way it tows as well. Go for it!
  • No experience with the CMax, but we've been towing our Ford Escape Hybrid for 12 years or so and it's been great. Easy to hitch up and tow and a good daily driver as well. If they still made it, I'd get another one.
