You really do have a catch 22. On your way home you will have to eat, sleep, fuel. To protect yourselves you need to travel alone, so no option of a younger family member coming to drive you home Air or any public travel is right out.
You could return to your younger days and tent it or sleep under the stars. That means you go shopping for air beds etc. Theres no easy way. But wouldnt it be fun?
I would chance the motels bring along all you need to eat.
When you do get home, another whole set of issues arises. do you have a plan for that?
