I'm single too, and I don't feel the need to be there for every small event. I'm not tied down by them. But I love them and enjoy being around them.
IMHO it's reasonable to travel and still have family time. Unlike many people my grandkids live close to me, so I won't be travelling to see them. When I get retired in a couple of years, I intend to take them with me. My love of the outdoors and camping was passed to me by family, and I want to do the same for my grandkids.
