Our Garmin 3550LM doesn't require paying $40-on-up per month for Internet access, nor does it require being able to access cell towers to operate - ONLY satellites.
It has free map updates, photos pop up of Interstate intersections to show me what lanes to stay in, a voice tells me how/when to turn if I wish, it plays audio books for me if I wish while traveling, I have loaded hundreds of thousands of custom locations into it, it's screen requires only light touch finger-tip scrolling and finger-tip zoom just like an iPhone, with an optional vehicle interface cord it can function as an engine monitor for our RV, I can use it in a vehicle or walking/hiking, it can remember/record where I've been, etc., etc..
IMHO, a specialized GPS unit with it's custom integrated circuits and software so far beats out "smart" phones and the like. I hope they always will.
