Anyone have info on electric/motorized bikes?

Over the last few years my lung disease has progressed to where I am unable to ride a bike anymore. I use portable oxygen but it still seems to be too difficult to ride more than a short distance. Has anyone had an experience on the motorized bikes I see advertised. They range in the $1000 range so it is not something I would just give a try. There is nowhere in our area to even look at one, everything is online. The reviews are all just average and the one main company (Yukon)that seems to be online gets a very poor rating for customer service. This makes me very wary, but I would still love to try one. We are heading down to Florida and to South Carolina soon so I would love to give it a try. Thanks.

  • My dad bought one over a year ago, gave me his peddle one. He paid $1500 and it folds up. Looks like a regular bike not one of the little wheel jobs. Not unusual for him to ride 15-20 miles at a shot. Battery never failed. Takes it to AZ in the winter. Rides it most every day. Oh, he's 92 years old.

Would adding a gas engine to a bike make it a motorcycle?

in most places NOT until it is larger than 50cc
thats why legal mopeds are 49cc

a 30cc engine on a bicycle, is just a motorized bike
most places it does not even qualify as a moped
    no legal restrictions most places
new york requires a Moped license for 49cc engines even for ones with pedals
  • some states are starting to license mopeds under 30 cc, and impose other restrictions.
    bumpy
  • I say wait until you get to Florida and then shop for the bike

Where in Florida and when ?

I have one that I like.....but it turns out that I don't use it as much as I thought I would.....and I HATE the derailleur gear mechanism, which they all seem to have.

I could arrange a test ride and/or tell you where the dealer is that I got mine from. I'm in Ocala; the dealer is about 20 miles west.

Have you considered adding a motor to an existing bike? Much more cost effective and not a difficult modification for those with knowledge of the systems.

Here's a link that can help you decide if its worth your time and the pros and cons to different types of mounting:
