I got 35 years out of start up tech companies and a couple of them made me some money. Instead of buying a Ferrari like some of my compatriots, I tucked it away in a retirement fund.
At the end of 2013, my tech luck run came to an end. I tried to get another job, but no one will hire a 64 yo software engineer, so at the beginning of 2015, I retired. I had a retirement job all lined up (flight instructor) so I'm doing that now. As soon as the DW joins me in retirement, we're going walkabout.
I would have worked till age 70 if I could. I loved software. Too bad tech companies are so youth centric. Frickin' kids have no work ethic and expect to be rewarded for just showing up.
