After 34 years as a LEO, most of which were spent in investigations, I still loved my career. However, considering my pension was almost maxed out, my physical abilities were starting to slow, and my wife wanted to retire, I pulled the pin in my late 50's.
We did an extended trip on our Harley, which I had wanted to do since getting out of the military.
Then I started a small residential contracting business which was really fun for about 3 years. Had the urge to start traveling so we jumped into our first fiver, sold the house and everything else, and never looked back!
Retirement is what you make of it. If you absolutely love your career and can't wait to go to work everyday then just keep working. Otherwise, if you can financially swing it give retirement a try. If you get bored or don't like it after a couple years you can always go back to work.
