Early retirement isn't the best thing for everyone as I'd found out personally. Started a business right out of college and it really did great and was extremely profitable. So at 44 years old as our kids were now married and gone, I'd planned to retire by my 45th birthday. Had salted away more than we'd need for retirement and had a fine ongoing very profitable business to sell also. Luckily, had 2 very fine employees who wanted to buy the business so I gave them the 1 year to blend into running it and getting the finances solidified and I semi-retired. Was going along fine but I missed the business and profession that I loved. TOOOOO young to retire!!!
We'd wanted to enjoy more traveling, RVing, boating, golf, family, etc every day rather than just when we could getaway, so we did. 11 months later, one (the "business minded" partner) was very critically injured in a vehicle accident from being hit by a drunk driver who was killed. Was left totally disabled and unable to walk or think clearly since which caused the other partner to back out of final ownership arangement so I came back out of semi-retirement. A shame as they were very good guys and good partners and were doing very well at continuing the business operation and profitability.
To be honest, I really missed the daily business life I thoroughly enjoyed anyway as I was simply too young to retire and was becoming bored without it and being in control of it daily. Very stressful? Sure was but that didn't bother me nearly as much as not making the day to day decisions and the interactions with my main customer base, the Big 3 design and engineering people etc. I thrive on stress as it causes me to think and dig deeper to resolve the issue etc. Tears some people up though!
At 57 years old, my same age wife fell and was badly injured which required many surgeries and "I" wanted to be there to help her daily as she was left and still is disabled. 54 years of being very happily married to my best friend and 2 peas in a pod! So I semi-retired again for a couple years and then sold my business and fully retired as it was finally the time to do so. Now, nearly 15 years later in our mid 70's and still being able to take all the time we want to do anything we want to and when we want to is pure golden.
Never in a hurry and no financial worries and very happy with our sticks & bricks home, vehicles, RV's, boats, etc, lives and family and helping our kids and grandkids and now the great grandkids. Retirement is beyond outstanding. Actually, have no desire to buy "new" toys etc like we used to every 2-3 years as we are totally pleased with the ones we have now, so why?
