I’ve been a geologist for over 35 years. I love my work and expected to work into my 70’s (an easy decision if you love your work). However, when I was laid off in early 2009 at the age of 62 I learned that neither the oil nor environmental industries (I had over a decade of experience in each) had no use for over +60 geologists. It’s aggravating because I’m in excellent health (my doctors opinion) and mentally quick but I never get past the “hey look, we got another old f__t looking for a job” stage of the resume review. I have found consulting work and I’m hoping to get some future part-time work in the national park service giving onsite geological presentations and talks to park attendees.
The good news is that I’ve come to enjoy the freedom of not having to go into work every day. As for corporate America in general, they may have contempt for me based on my age but it’s nothing compared to the contempt I’ve developed for them and their age prejudiced decisions.
