Anyone paint over the brass fixtures?

It appears a lot of mid-2000's motorhomes come with brass fixtures. Has anyone painted over them along with the metal on the shower stalls?
Or would it be easier to replace all fixtures and then just paint the stall?

True this, I spent many a happy hour in my early days at sea, polishing brass.

If the brass irritates you that much, I would replace the fixtures. Chances are, the fixtures were the cheapest available to the mfg. so you would be upgrading the quality, also.

With a handle like 'SeaDog' it's no wonder.
Too much time on boats and access to Brasso?

I also like brass.........nice clean shiny brass.

And YES brass can easily be painted.

    Light sanding with fine-grit paper
Good cleaning/wipe down with a tact cloth
Light coat of primer...let dry then another light coat
Primer dry.......couple light coats with spray paint with dry time between coats.
  • I did just that 2 years ago and I haven't had a single chip. Don't use the spray paints found in your big surface stores. Go to an automotive paint store. They will add a hardener to their paint and put it under pressure in a spray can. It will cost you about $25 rather than $6 per can but it will not chip.

  • Question- am I the only one who finds the shiny brass to be hideously gaudy?
I am shocked they were still doing this in the mid-00's.
We remodeled our house in 2005 and anything brass was a huge no-no. Kinda like shopping for avocado appliances.
  • We have done this in the house with cheap brass fixtures. I just used Rustoleum hammered finish spray paint. Worked fine. I didn't even buff the surface - just shot it and let it dry. Works fine on fixtures. Not sure if it would hold up on stuff you touch a lot though.

makes a huge difference in how things look.
  • Easier in this order:

    1) Leave it alone
    2) Get a new motorhome
    3) Replace all the fixtures
    4) Paint it all and watch the paint peel over the next few years
  • I think it would be very hard to get the paint to stick. You would have to scuff the surface well, use a good primer then a quality paint. In the end it will probably not look too hot. Best if you took it apart and painted each piece. I would replace what I could and leave the rest alone....or just just leave it alone..
