anyone towing 12000 lb 5th wheel with 3/4 ton pick up

I have a 2013 GMC 3/4 ton pick up (6 liter with a 4.10 rear) and would like to purchase a new 5th wheel. Campers World is telling me I will be underpowered despite the fact that the truck is rated to tow 13,900 with a 3000 pin weight and the trailer I want has a dry weight of 12,000 with a pin weight of 2185. Appreciate the thoughts of anyone towing a combination similar to this. Thanks

You should have offered to tow the space shuttle instead of the poor Tundra 1/2 ton they had to use.

  • Our trailer is about 10,500 lb fully loaded. The pin weight is about 2,300 lbs. this puts my truck at GVWR. It hauls and brakes fine but I can't see adding another 3,500 lbs safely.
  • I did, the trailer weighs 12,000 (loaded). I now tow with a 1-ton dual and am happier
  • The CW salesman was just being honest with you. Take the information and make a good choice.
  • Personally I wouldn't tow 14k fiver with 3/4 ton. Way over payload rating. That would be a 2800 pin which will leave you about 200 lbs before adding hitch, gear, passengers, etc.

I have 6.0 and 4:10 axle on 1 ton srw. My fiver gvwr is 12,400. This set up works well for me for weekend towing and one long trip per year. There is no way I would be comfortable pulling anything heavier with a gasser though.

You will want to stick with 12k gvwr fiver or less for your 3/4 ton truck. Or you will be finding a reason to get a 2014 1 ton.
  • I wouldn't have a problem with 14k max on a 3/4 ton, just not a gasser.

  • Question should be.....'Anyone towing a 14K 5'vr with 3/4 ton truck'

Dry weight isn't the number you need to pay attention to.
    Trailer GVWR is.

    I tow 14K (13,830# scaled with 2970 pin weight)with 3500 SRW.
Any more weight and I'd go to a 3500 DRW.
  • The salesman is right. You will be much happier with a lighter unit or upgrade to a bigger truck. We had an F250 V10 with a 4.3 RAR and larger headers for power. We bought the current fifth wheel and had air bags installed to help with the load. Flat towing was no problem, anytime we had to tow any grades we blew the lines on the air bags, not to meniton that the engine sounded like it was going to come through the firewall and all that with poor fuel mileage - 7 - 9 mpg. Finally could afford to upgrade to a 1 ton F350 DRW Diesel. Never looked back and now look all around without white knuckles.
  • Well for once I would say the salesman is probably correct. 12k# unloaded is likely over 14k# GVWR meaning aweful close to that 3000# pin wieght without anything else (like hitch, full fuel and passengers)in the truck. Not only will you likely be underpowered but probably over the carrying capacity of that truck in real life

    >14k# GVWR is squarely in dually territory. I pull a 12k GVWR (and scaled) FW several thousand miles a year. I use a dually and wouldn't use anything less

For your truck you should be looking for around 10k empty (12k GVWR) maximum would be my guess.
