2004 F150 with 5.4 and 3.73 axle and Ford tow package. Pulled a 2002 Cougar 286 (about 30'). No mods to truck and used a Pullrite auto slider. FW weighed in at 8400lbs. Never got the pin weighed but the truck only squatted an inch hooked up. Never felt overloaded and it stopped well, even in panic mode. However, I was clearly near max capacity. A properly equipped 1/2 ton and the right FW is doable, IMHO.
