Anything stolen from locked compartments.

By accident I ran into a locksmith that has blanks for my TT and he also had several different sizes of compartment cam locks. Myself and a lot of other people use the CH 751 to open compartments.

Thought I would get something else that not everyone has or maybe better put... to keep honest people honest. I know they are not very strong compartments doors but at least I would have different lock than most.

I have only lost a loaf of bread by a raccoon and no other problems in about 20 years of RVing.

So I'm asking have you ever had anything stolen from your locked compartments when camping or stopped when traveling? Storage lots or parked in your driveway or stuff stolen that you left out doesn't count.

Thanks
  • Never had anything stolen over the years, and am just using the 751 keys like most. Generally I don't have much worth stealing in outside storage anyway. More $$ in batteries and propane tanks on the tongue than I keep in the storage.
  • Only thing not taken by racoons was a laundry basket, it was taken while washing clothes. Everything else was racoons getting into our things. We did find out racoons get real mad when you lock them out and they let us know it. Damage to locked ice chest and storage door (caught in the act).
  • I forget a portable gas grill at a park for 2 days and when I came back it was gone.

Other then that no, nothing stolen. Where I camp I usually don't even bother to lock the doors. If I do it is just to keep a friend from accidentally letting the dog out.

I did leave a bucket behind at the dump station once. When I went camping back there 2 weeks later the bucket was still there. I guess there is not to much of a black market for buckets. lol
  • 35+ years of RVing and I have never had anything stolen from the rig or from a campsite. I sometimes forget where I put stuff, but that's another story.
  • Never in 40 years. Had a few beers lifted at the drags. Someone ran out at night.

I work at a locksmith shop and people come in freaked out about their ch751 keys.

I have also had people come in that had their locked compartments broken into while in storage and what was stolen cost less than meeting their deductible plus getting doors repaired is a big hassle.
  • We exchanged out our common locks with new ones. Sure, anybody with a good screw driver could pop them open, but we did it anyway, and no, no one has broken in. However, I don't believe it has anything to do with changing the locks.
