Are reservations necessary

I think a trip like you are describing would be wonderful in April, May or June when the weather is ideal in FL and the snowbirds have departed.

But most people head south in Feb to escape the cold, and maybe you are, too. As others have said, anywhere warm and waterfront is premium in S. Florida...might take a lot of phoning and/or driving around looking, which doesn't sound like the carefree trip you envision.

You did not say how big your RV is. Bigger sometimes = harder to find a site, of course. If you want full hookups, same.

The sites you do find might be, with good luck, cancellations, or possibly the leftover pickings near the highway noise, but you could certainly give it a try. The prices are going to be a bit steep. For the Keys, expect to pay $40 a night for a state park (very, very hard to get into in Feb) up to $60 - $100+ for a commercial park.

If you want to make some reservations now for February, you can still get sites at Flamingo CG in Everglades National Park, which has electric. You probably can get a dry camping site (and no pets or generator use) at Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge. You can also still get some of the state parks in the northern inland area, but it may be a bit chilly.

I camped at Silver River state Park in Florida over Memorial day. Some friends wanted to come in their TT but could not get a reservation. The park was packed except for a few spots - one real nice one adjacent to mine - would have been great for our friends. I asked at the ranger's office about this and they stated that they always keep spots open for first come first serve. Not sure if this is always the case with state parks in Fla. but you can always give them a call and see what they have available.

I 4 north and central not much of a problem, every mile south from there it gets harder and generally more expensive, closer to the coast the same is true…
COE and State parks are tough… if you are on a budget start out along the Rt. 27 corridor and reach out to the east and west from there…
A couple of years ago it was more doable but things have picked back up… January, FEBUARY, March will be the hardest months to find drive up vacancy…

We just go and make no reservations however we travel short days and start looking for a place to stay early in the afternoon. We also do not travel on Fri or Sat as those nights can be a problem with the weekenders out. We have been turned down once in the last 5 years but see many turned down later in the day. If you have a given place you want to go you can call in the morning after 10 or so that way any one not being able to make it to that park should have called in so you may be able to fill in for some one that can not make it. weekends or holidays you may need reservations. During the week shouldn't be a problem unless it's a very popular tourist area. We just call ahead the day before.

As long as you are prepared to divert often it should not be a problem, at least in north Florida

Using MS Streets & Trips, you have access to most all the parks. Every day put in your radius (300 mi?) and you'll get the parks in that area. Call the ones that look promising and use RV Park reviews. We haven't had a problem finding a vacancy at a nice park. FL has many county parks that rival the best commercial ones.

Last February 1st my wife and I left Michigan for our first snowbird trip to Florida. We spent 6 weeks down there and while we really didn't make reservations per se we did end up finding out about someone on this site that was cancelling their state park reservations at Oscar Sherer SP in Osprey. We ended up reserving 9 days there. FYI: State parks in the lower half of Florida are usually full throughout the winter months, although you may be able to get into Highland Hammocks SP in Sebring. Being away from the coasts makes for easier drive up camping.

Basically we didn't make reservations and ended up camping at 9 different parks. More than half the time we did call ahead to reserve a site at places we wanted to make sure of before traveling there. I did this 1-3 days ahead. I created a list of about 35 potential RV parks before leaving Michigan. I used RV Park Review.com to research different parks and listed contact numbers, websites, rates, amenities, comments from other campers, etc. This way I narrowed down parks that we more than likely preferred due to location, amenities, or cost. While reservations are not always necessary you really need to bone up on the possibilities, especially if it's your first trip down there. You don't want to be without a site at 7 p.m. unless you can find a friendly Walmart.

We stayed at most parks for about 3-4 days. They always had space for us and there were always vacant sites. One time we extended our stay from 4 days to 7 because we liked the park. There may be some popular parks, especially those closest to the coasts in high tourist areas, that fill up to the point you can't get in. We just never found that ourselves, but you will have several other posters here tell you that reservations are necessary. They are not necessary because there are many thousands of campsites throughout Florida. Since you're willing to be flexible you shouldn't have a problem. But do your homework first.

Off the main roads we have never had a problem finding an RV park, by the 2nd or 3rd try at the latest. Often I figure out the night before where I'm going, otherwise start calling about 1-2 pm on the day of travel.
