IMHO, the single biggest question is, "How do your kids handle long car rides?"
My kids have been road tripping since they were infants. 10 hours in the car? No problem. Stack of books or their Kindles and they're good to go. No DVDs or videos needed. We did 5200 miles in 2.5 weeks last summer.
If your kids aren't seasoned road warriors, I'd start with a trip a little less-aggressive.
