Hi. We have taken several transcontinental trips with our 2 children when they were teenagers, in our cars. Since we started RVing, we have taken 2 trans. trips in it with our now adult children. So, I think I have some experience to back up what I will post. In general, I agree with the others who have indicated that your planned trip is not a good idea. Can it be done? Yes. But, you are not part of some TV reality show. You are trying to have a good time with your family. So, I would not recommend it to you at this time. Driving the RV is not the same as driving a car or van. It takes more effort, attention to the road and what's around you, and concentration when lane changing, passing, turning, and even moving around the gas pumps. Simply put, it is more tiring to drive x miles compared to a car.
Also, it seems you would need to learn how to operate the various components of the RV, that cars don't have. In the RV, the toilets need to be "managed", i.e., you need to know when and where to dump. Would your family members be comfortable draining sewage in what may be high temps.? For some appliances to work, the RV would need to be leveled upon reaching a camp site. Not hard to do, but takes a little time. You would need to learn this during your trip.
RVing for most of us is fun. I would hope it can become fun for your family as well. I'm not certain that your planned trip will be fun. Rent an RV for a week or so, and camp not far from home. Learn how to drive it, back it up, level it, and learn how to take care of some of the less pleasant things associated with the RV. In time, a trip will be fun, even if it requires long periods of driving. Best wishes.
