I say go for it. We live in south Mississippi and it takes us 2.5 days of driving to get to the Grand Canyon and that includes side trips like passing through Petrified Forest/Painted Desert National Park, and the El Malpais National Monument. We drive long hours (12 hrs or so) but as a police officer I am used to the long drives and my wife and kids love it. We are a family that loves the driving to the destination as much as the destination itself. My boys were 5 the first time we went and they had a blast. They loved it again at 10 and hopefully this summer again at 15. They are sensible kids who were home schooled like yours and they enjoy the little things in life. The only thing I would worry about myself is the possibility of Rental RV trouble like previously mentioned. I would still do it with a well thought out Plan B just in case. I hope you have a safe and fun trip if you go.
