I don't think the answer is "rent a larger Class A". I say "rent whatever is comfortable to drive". A class C is just a "big truck" and is probably less intimidating for a first time.
But, YES... if you have a chance to rent and explore closer to home FIRST and can handle it, then decide. Just don't make this your first trip.
And, I agree with Gary... you sound like a trooper. If it's really what you WANT, you'll make it happen, I'm sure. :)
