When I mounted ours inside, I set it up with plugs/receptacles so that I can unplug it from the circuit should it fail.
I've had plugs overheat so adding two additional connections in a hidden area is not something I would do. Yes, they are protected from the weather and have a good chance of not having problems.
Overheating in the plug is usually caused by corroded blades or loose connections ( or low voltage) . This can happen at the pedestal where it gets a lot of use and is exposed to the weather. Having a the autoformer hooked up with receptacle/plug you don't have the plugging/unplugging and it's protected so the connection stays clean and tight. If you do have the autoformer first in the circuit and you get a hit/spike, the autoformers protective circuit will trip and you will no longer have power until you take it out of play. I can unplug mine in a few seconds and be back on line. To me that's better than unhooking hardwired connections and tieing them together with wirenuts or similar.
