Automatic Propane Regulator

I need to buy an automatic changeover propane regulator.

I have seen:

Cavagna
Mr Heater
Camco
Marshall

Comments welcomed on those regulators.

My RV is 200 miles away and I can't measure the pigtail length from the regulator to the tank. While I am at it, I will get two pigtails as well. Is the correct length 1' or 2'?

Thanks.

  • Cavagna hands down

Marshall Excelsior if you can't get Cavagna (NOT the same old Marshalls that were junk)
  • I leave both valves open on our tanks. I periodically check the indicator to see if the auto switch has changed tanks. If it has then time to switch the lever and fill the empty tank. This way we don't run out overnight in cold weather using the furnace.
  • I thought the manual one might be preferable. That way I know for sure when the tank is empty.
You can also do that with an auto change over regulator. Just leave the valve on the second tank turned off.

Some people highly recommend Cavagna regulators.
  • Cavagna appears to be superior to me. The indicator snaps to red for a very definitive indication to refill a tank. The OEM Marshall was very poor in comparison as it would creep up and leave me guessing.
  • Do you want an auto changeover? My manual switch regulator started making a noise and I bought an automatic replacement because the salesman said most people do and it's only a couple dollars more. But later, thinking about it, I thought the manual one might be preferable. That way I know for sure when the tank is empty. Anyway, the new one doesn't seem to auto switch anyway.

I have two small bottles, holding about 20 pounds of propane each. I use a suitcase weigh scale to measure how much is left.
  • I don't have experience with the others, but we replaced ours with a Camco last year and it's been fine. I can't say that's a glowing positive review, but that's all I have:)
  • I like either Marshall Excelsior or Cavagna. 12" can be a bit tight- normal is 15", but 24" is fine- simply loop them back. I really like the stainless braid covered pigtails.
