Thanks for your input. I'd consider US=301 except it sure looks like a lot of congestion potential once you get up near Washington with a lot of traffic lights, etc. I like US highways too and love to get away from the trucks on the interstates but many US routes can get you into a lot of slow, stop-and-go areas that not only are slow but frustrating with all the red lights. I'm afraid on a Saturday 301 might be very crowded around all the small towns.
I'll think about it some more but since it'll be a Saturday trip I sorta think the interstate route will be OK if we leave at dawn and go around DC on I-495 and Baltimore on I-695.
